Documentary Screening: The Cove

April 9th. 7:30 PM at Big Arts. $10.


Sanibel Sea School will partner with Big Arts to show you a screening of The Cove, the Oscar-winning, action-packed documentary about a team of activists who go to Japan on a secret mission to film and expose the horrific practice of killing dolphins by the thousands each year in Taiji. After being corralled into a large cove, these dolphins are sold to dolphin parks or slaughtered and sold as meat in Japanese markets.

Come watch this Sundance Audience Award-winning film and hear from Expedition Coordinator Simon Hutchins and marine technician Greg Mooney about the work that went into producing this stunning documentary.

 

Dr. Carl Safina

Dr. Carl Safina, award-winning author, scientist, and co-founder of the Blue Ocean Institute will speak about “The Importance of the Oceans to Our Very Existence.” Dr. Safina was recently named one of the 100 most notable conservationists of the 20th century by Audubon Magazine. Join us for this unique opportunity to learn about marine conservation from one of the world’s most notable experts!

 

Documentary Screening: The End of the Line

April 23rd. 7 PM

In celebration of Earth Day 2010, Sanibel Sea School will be screening The End of The Line – a powerful film outlining many important global fisheries issues. Come watch the critically acclaimed film with us and learn how you can become a better steward of our ocean resources. Following the screening, there will be an opportunity for discussion with Dr. Bruce Neill, Executive Director of Sanibel Sea School. We hope to see you there!

 

 

  

This time of the year we’re focusing on:

Ways in which adults can help conserve our ocean resources by learning about important issues and by how they consume seafood.

Take Five

Sanibel Sea School participants take five minutes of their time to collect litter from the natural environment.

Each of our students ‘take five’ to help clean up the environment during our field trips. We incorporate this as a learning tool. We measure and quantify litter to see how much of an impact we have made and better understand what types of materials are most commonly left behind by other users.

We also encourage visitors to recycle by asking students to bring in their family’s recyclables while they are visiting Sanibel.
